We have left Patagonia and i am at the Galapagos Islands now. Soon i will publish the first pictures here....but before that i want to review the 19th season with the right whales and wonderfull Patagonia.....

It´s a hard job.

Our marine biologist Robert M. Lehmann is taking pictures for our new PR movie about the last Patagonia trip.

He is really enjoying hte Magellanic Penguin.....its a male as we can see on the large forehead and he was really interested in the camera.

The next trip with Frank and Robert will be the Orca Camp from March 31t to April 14th. We will visit this penguin again in Cabo dos Bahias Nationalpark before he leaves to the open sea in Mid April when the reproduction season is over....

unfortunatly not all Babys can make it. Here we see the scientists taken samples of the dead whale to analyse the reason of the death.

Whales feeding in Valdez

This year we arrived Peninsula Valdez 2 days before fullmoon.

During these days crabs come easily to the surface and whales might feed....So we went out to look for them.....

Whale in Patagonia like to come close to the boats. Sometimes they show their flukes for hours....

Only on Fullmoon evening we can get this pictures. What a luck that the sea was calm and the whales in the mood.

Pico is one of the best spots in the world to explore the biodiversity of marine life. Most of the time we think about the big animals like whales and dolphins.

Nuno Sa is a wildlife photographer that looks into other corners as well. Sometimes its a little hole or a cave where you find surprising creatures.....

Nuno worked with Pico Sport twice in 2011 and in June 2012 an expedition around Pico Island is in preparation to explore more than 30 dive sites....

Now enjoy and see what divers and snorkler`s might experience in a Pico visit.

Nuno says that the Azores have a great chance to become one of the Top 10 dive spots in the world. The new dive programms developed during the last 3 years, diving at Princess Alice Bank and Banco Joao Castro, the extroordinary diving with blue sharks and mako sharks, snorkeling with smooth hammerheads are unique.

Now we are working to motivate the government to open marine parks and protect the enviroment, to allow the coatel fish species to reproduce and create a garden of Eden for marine life, biodiversity and snorklers and divers from around the world.

Nuno Sa is a finalist of the 2011 BBC Wildlife Photographer of the year and has good chances to win the competition. His winning shoot is a blue shark taken at Condor bank close to Pico.

The shot above is his latest picture taken in August 2011 and we hope many more will follow.

Es gibt viele verschiedene Geschichten, wie man ein Teil des Pico Sport Teams wird.

Mein Name ist Friederike, ich bin 21 Jahre alt und war schon fünf mal auf den Azoren. Angefangen hat alles mit einem Familienurlaub auf Texel. Auf Empfehlung der Nachbarn ging es im nächsten Jahr mit der ganzen Familie zur berühmten Delfinschule von Pico Sport. Zum ersten Mal kam ich in den Genuss Wale und Delphine in freier Wildbahn zu beobachten und es wurden mir die ersten Grundlage über Meeressäuger beigebracht. 2006 stand der nächste Familienurlaub auf den Azoren an. In diesem Jahr erinnern ich mich gerne an den „Orcaalarm“. Morgens um 6 Uhr wurden wir aus dem Bett geklingelt. Man konnte nur das Wort „Orca“ aus dem Telefonhörer verstehen. Also ging es mit einem Affenzahn raus aufs Meer. Nach langer Suche wurden wir mit einer wunderschönen Schule dieser anmutigen Tiere belohnt. Diesen Glückstag werde ich nie vergessen. Süchtig nach diesen Momenten startete ich im nächsten Jahr in meinen Schulferien ein Praktikum bei Pico Sport. Ich arbeitete als Guide auf den Booten und versuchte mein erlerntes Wissen aus den vorherigen Jahren an die Gäste weiter zugeben. Durch die atemberaubenden Ereignisse sprudelte ich auch noch zuhause voller Begeisterung. Ich steckte meine lange Freundin Lisa an und wie es der Zufall so will, wurde auch sie als Marinero ins Pico Sport Team aufgenommen.

So fing also mein Abenteuer auf den Azoren an. Ich bin 20 Jahre alt und kam 2009 mit Friederike das erste Mal zu Pico Sport. Die Aufregung am Anfang schlug schon nach den ersten Ausfahrten in Begeisterung und Faszination um.
Die unglaublichen Erlebnisse solcher Wal- und Delfintouren begleiten mich das ganze Jahr und so beschloss auch ich wieder zukommen.
Ich studiere Medizin, trotzdem haben die Meeressäuger einen so bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen, dass ich meine Semesterferien nutze um diese fantastischen Tiere in ihrem Lebensraum beobachten zu können und sie den Gästen näher zu bringen. Auch Friederike nutzt jetzt die Zeit neben ihrem Studium der Agrawissenschaften um weiter bei Pico Sport zu arbeiten.

Heute:
2011 zog es uns beide wieder nach Pico. Dieses Jahr wurden wir von einem ausgesprochen netten Team empfangen und durften zu Beginn die neue Base in Lajes do Pico betreuen. Neben den Whale Watching und Delfin Schwimm Trips, gibt es bei Pico Sport viele Profi Fotografen, die die Vielfalt der Azoren für ihre Aufnahmen nutzen. Mit den Teams verbringt man als Marinero ganz außergewöhnliche Tage.
Besonders spannend finden wir die Möglichkeit an internationalen Film- und Fotoproduktionen teilzuhaben und Erlebtes später auf Leinwänden, DVD´s oder in Zeitschriften wieder zu finden.
Frank Wirth, Gründer von Pico Sport, versucht immer wieder junge Menschen für sein Team zu begeistern, ihnen Chancen zu geben, sowie wissenschaftlich und nachhaltig mit ihnen zu arbeiten.
Der Alltag hier auf Pico wird von immer neuen Herausforderungen und Erfahrungen geprägt. Man kann nur sagen, jedes Jahr gibt es wieder neue Überraschungen und Erlebnisse. Doch eines bleibt Jahr für Jahr erhalten: Das Glücksgefühl draußen auf dem Wasser - das Blau des Meeres, das Grün und Schwarz der Insel im Hintergrund und die beeindruckendsten Tiere der Welt. Nicht nur durch die Beobachtung der Tiere, sondern auch der intensiven Kontakt zu den Gästen, lernt man jede Saison etwas neues dazu. Auf ein nächstes Mal bei Pico Sport!

Unexpected visitors!!!

Yesterday, the 28th of August was one of those days that were EXTRA exciting, since our boats and customers out on the water had some unexpected visitors... Our whale watching charter had a Humpback whale around for a few hours feeding only a few miles north of Pico. We had some amazing activity as the photos do show.

Pico Sport's divers had a very unexpected visit from a Minke whale while they were diving with Blue Sharks. The whale was very curious and stayed around very close for about 5 minutes. Awesome!!!!

Also Claudia and Manfred, our Austrian professional film makers had an amazing day out on the water, with the Humpback whale at the start of the day, Blue Sharks at lunch time, Atlantic spotted dolphins around dinner and a few curious Sperm whales at sunset...!!! Big smiles for customers AND crew all day!!!!

Pottwale entfernen laut einer Studie jährlich rund 400.000 Tonnen Kohlenstoff aus der Atmosphäre - und zwar auf indirektem Wege: Ihre Ausscheidungen regen das Algenwachstum an.

Trish Lavery von der Flinders University in Adelaide und ihren Kollegen sind bei der Untersuchung einer Pottwal-Population im Südpolarmeer auf durchaus erstaunliche Bilanzrechnungen gestoßen.

Wie sie in den "Proceedings of the Royal Society B" schreiben, leben in dieser Region rund 12.000 Tiere, die ihr Geschäft meist in den lichtdurchfluteten Bereichen des Meeres verrichten. Diese Angewohnheit bewirkt eine Nährstoffumverteilung von globalem Ausmaß. Über den Kot der Meeresriesen gelangen nebst organischen Verbindungen jährlich rund 50 Tonnen Eisen in die oberen Meeresschichten, das Phytoplankton reagiert auf diese Düngung mit regem Wachstum.

Die Bilanz: Jährlich werden der Atmosphäre dadurch 400.000 Tonnen Kohlenstoff entzogen - rund doppelt so viel, wie die Pottwale des Südpolarmeeres wieder via Atmung abgeben. Fazit: Walfang ist nicht nur in Bezug auf die Artenvielfalt verwerflich, er hemmt auch die Selbstregulation des Klimas.

The Return of the Fin Whales

We are heading towards September and slowly the number of whale watchers is decreasing. August has been a very busy month (hence the silence from our whale watch crew on FB… ;-)) and apart from a few stormy days, the weather has been amazingly sunny and calm. The water visibility has been incredible, which made the dolphin swims a very special experience to all those that joined us. And also the whale watchers had amazing days out on the ocean. We have been fortunate to encounter at least 1 newborn Sperm whale calf of not more than 3 metres long, very curious to the surrounding boats. Also the dolphin pods showed high numbers of small calves.

Heading into September we observed the first returning Fin whale off the North Coast of Pico Island a few days ago. High, stable numbers of the big Baleen whales migrate through the Azores in the spring months heading up to their northern feeding grounds. On top of this northward migration, the last few years have shown Fin whales coming through the Azores in September feeding on the sardine runs in the Atlantic. When the sardines run close to shore, we have the exciting opportunity to encounter large pods of dolphins, many birds and sometimes up to 10 fin whales in the area. Here at Pico Sport we are keeping our fingers crossed for more fin whale encounters in the following weeks!!!

Blue sharks at Pico island

Now it becomes clear.

Pico will be the Nr. 1 spot for the be very close to sharks. No other shark species comes as close as the Blue Sharks.

The french photographer and author Joe Bunnie is with us and took this 2 shoots yesterday . The sharks stayed more than 2 hours with him....on very close encounter.

You will see some of the Pico Blues in his new book +/- 5 Meter which is comming in to the market by the end of this year....and you will be surprised.....

Fullmoon at Pico

The fullmoon nights are impressive when the moon rises high above Mt. Pico. Its one of these nights where you sit at the Ocean, listen to the sounds of the sea and the shearwater birds, a nice glass of Pico wine and a fresh fish on the BBQ.....what a wonderfull place this is.

Live aboard Dive Cruises in the Azores

The first time in the diving market in the Azores a Dive Cat will start to sail on Scuba Diving Cruises in the Central Islands of the Azores. From June 30th 2012 until the end of September 2012 the 13,5m Cat will operate under the flag of Pico Sport to explore the most exciting dive sites of the Atlantic Ocean.

The 7 day cruise includes 16 dives at the Blue and Mako shark spot´s , an overnight at Princess Alice Bank and an overnight at the most thrilling dive spot of Banco Joao Castro.

The rest of the nights we will anker in the ports of Faial, Madalena, Lajes or Velas. This allows us to enjoy the local cousine. The long distance sails will be done during the night so you wake up at the dive spot.

The Cat is also available for charter weeks.

In May, June and October we will offer sailing cruises from Faial, Pico to Sao Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira. We are sure that specially in may some blue whales will cross our route.

20^th July- dolphin swim with Pico Sport, always a new adventure!

What was supposed to be a dolphin swim turned out to become an extraordinary whale watching trip!

On a sunny morning in July we left the harbour in Lajes, where Frank recently opened a new shop. We are operating from both Madalena and Lajes now, the two largest cities on Pico Island.

Once on the water, we soon encountered a pod of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), which is endemic to the temperate and tropical areas of the Atlantic Ocean. We put the swimmers (two at a time) in the water and they had a really good time with the animals. After a while, one of our vigias got exciting news: He had spotted rare Northern bottlenose whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus)! This species is also endemic to the North Atlantic Ocean and belongs to the group of the beaked whales (Ziphiidae).

Beaked whales are one of the least known groups of mammals because of their deep-sea habitat, mysterious habits, and apparent low abundance. It was hunted heavily in Norway and England, leaving an estimated population of approx. 10,000 animals.

We took off and approached them very slowly and carefully. There were four or five animals traveling together, showing impressive blows!

As we were aiming to continue the ‘dolphin swim’, we looked for some bottlenose dolphins due to the advices of the vigia. We found false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) instead! A few of the approximately 30 animals surrounded the boat, definitely very curios, and surfaced right next to the boat. One of the bigger males (they can grow up to 6 meters) even rubbed its belly against the boat- outstanding!

The False Killer Whale has not been extensively studied in the wild; much of the data about it has been derived by examining stranded animals.
We could not find any words to describe this very special encounter! It was the first time in 2011, that false killer whales were seen in the Azorean waters.

After all we had seen that day, we also found a pod of short finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus), the second largest member of the oceanic dolphin family (Delphinidae).

Both false killer and pilot whales belong to Blackfish, which consists in 6 species of cetaceans (orca, long and short finned pilot whale, melon- headed whale, pygmy killer whale and false killer whale) They are commonly called whales but classified scientifically in the Delphinidae or oceanic dolphin family.

Beaked whales

Beaked whales are rear to be seen. Yesterday Michael Webersberger was lucky when this whale was interested in the boat on our way from princess Alice to Pico Island. He came so close twice that we had time enought to hold the cameras in to the water from the boat.....what a luck to get a shoot of a seldom animal like this.

Ein Voluntariat bei Pico Sport

Mein Name ist Valentina, ich bin 22 Jahre alt und komme aus Österreich.

Vor einigen Monaten habe ich mich bei Pico Sport als Volantaire beworben und habe nun das Glück für zwei Monate mitarbeiten zu können. Hier untersuche ich grade den Tentakel eines Riesenkraken den wir treibend an der Oberfläche gefunden haben.....Pottwale tauchen hier bis 2500m tief und jagen diese Lebewesen. manchmal findet man dann Reste der Mahlzeit auf dem Wasser.

Ich bin nun seit zwei Wochen hier auf Pico und das was ich bis jetzt gesehen und erlebt habe hat all meine Erwartungen übertroffen, es ist einfach unglaublich was man hier alles erleben kann.

Jeden Tag kommt es zu neuen Herausforderungen neuen Erlebnissen die einem nur bereichern können.

Ich hatte auch die Ehre die ersten fünf Tage ein professionelles österreichisches Kamerateam zu begleiten. Wir waren täglich bis zu 10 Stunden am Wasser und hatten atemberaubende

Erlebnisse mit Walen, Delfine, Haie, Schildkröten, Schwertfische, und vielen mehr.

Auf dem folgenden Bild sehen wir Manfred Hochleitner mit einem Pottwal. Eine absolut irre Begegnung. Manfred filmt für eine ORF / Discovery Produktion und arbeitet seit 2 Jahren mit Pico Sport an diesem Projekt. Pico Sport arbeitet ständig mit Film und Fototeams aus aller Welt und gilt als das weltweit erfahrenste Unternehmen wenn es um Wal und Delphinaufnahmen unter und über Wasser geht.

Sowerby's beaked whales!!!

Two of our whale watching trips over the last few days have had the special and exciting opportunity to view the elusive Sowerby's beaked whale!! A quick glimpse before diving again, but the unmistakable head made it clear it was beaked whales we were seeing!!

Sowerby's beaked whale (Mesoplodon bidens), aka North Atlantic beaked whale, is a slender cetacean that measures between 4-5 m in length and weighs between 900-1,100 kg. They have 2 teeth in the lower jaw that protrude in males. The dorsal fin is small and curved with a rounded tip. The flukes are dark in color and unnotched. The flippers of Sowerby's beaked whale are curved and relatively long compared to other Mesoplodon species. Sowerby's beaked whales are slate to blue-gray on the dorsal side, lighter on the ventral side with occasional gray or white spots.

Little is known about Sowerby's beaked whale, however some have been observed surfacing head first at a steep angle after which the animal spends about 1 minute breathing. They then dive for 10-15 minutes, and have been observed resurfacing up to 800 external link m away.

Beaked Whales (Family Ziphiidae)
These medium-sized to moderately large whales have a single pair of grooves on the throat. There is a distinct snout, and often the few teeth present are visible only in adult males.
These whales are deep divers and are rarely seen. Many species are known only from a few specimens, and little is known about the life history and biology of the group. All members of this family, except Blainville's beaked whale, are difficult to distinguish from each other, and study by museum experts is usually necessary for identification.

Based on data collected from strandings, Sowerby's beaked whale, Mesoplodon bidens, is found in temperate and subartic waters in the eastern and western North Atlantic.

Sowerby's beaked whale likely feeds on squid, octopus and fish.

Summer whale and dolphin watching

What an excellent kick start of July for whale and dolphin watching! The last few days have been great; the sea couldn't have been any calmer, the visibility clearer, the sun warmer and the animals more abundant. Our customers and the crew have been lucky to witness Sperm whales in active, social surface behaviours. One group of 3 whales showed the juvenile in the group rolling onto its side, spy hopping and showing its odd-looking narrow lower jaw, tail lifting, and rubbing against the other members of the group. A few whale watching boats were silently follwing, until the whales stopped moving and slowly started drifting in our direction. The enguines were shut down and the whales given free path to go their way. All 3 animals spy hopped before slowly passing close by the boats while observing us. Back on their way to the deep blue... Wow!
And then the dolphins...! Big groups of common and Atlantic spotted dolphins interacting with the boat. A group of bottlenose dolphins came bow-riding and the amazing visibility made up for a great encounter! And the presence of striped and Risso's dolphins finished off some beautiful days. All dolphin groups seem to have many new born calves in their midst, some with their foetal folds still visible, which indicated that they are only a few days old.!! How special to be able to view these newcomers!!

Plant-for-the-Planet

The children's initiative Plant-for-the-Planet was founded in January 2007 and originated from a school project on climate change by Felix Finkbeiner, then 9 years of age. In his project’s conclusion Felix developed the vision of children planting one million trees in each country worldwide thus creating a countermeasure to global carbon emissions. In the following years Plant-for-the-Planet grew into a global movement with currently about 100.000 children in over 100 countries engaged in the initiative. They see themselves as global citizens campaigning for climate justice, which in their eyes includes a total reduction of the emission of gases affecting the climate and the fair distribution of emission rights among all people.

On July 14th Rhino Watch Lodge is welcoming Felix and his Family in Kenya. We will have a children's academy with 500 children and a planting session of 200 trees patronized by Maisha Wirth and Rhino-Watch-Lodge, their local partner in Kenya. Rhino Watch Lodge will maintain a long time relationship with the children of the Plant-for-the-Planet and support their tree planting projects in the future.

Atlantic Spotted dolphins!!

The first Atlantic spotted dolphins of this season have arrived!! The sea conditions on our whale watch trip of this morning were not the most favourable. Strong winds causing swell and white caps prevented us from being able to spot whales. Nevertheless it turned out to be a great trip, with the sighting of a Mola mola (sunfish), a Loggerhead turtle and our first seasonal sighting of the acrobatic and social Atlantic spotted dolphin.

The Atlantic Spotted Dolphin (Stenella frontalis) is a dolphin found in the Gulf Stream of the North Atlantic Ocean. Older members of the species have a very distinctive spotted coloration all over their body. The coloring of the Atlantic Spotted Dolphin varies enormously as they grow. Calves are a fairly uniform grey colour. When the calves are weaned, they then begin to get their spots. Juveniles have some dark spots on their belly, and white spots of their flanks. Their back and dorsal fin are a darker grey than the rest of the body. As the animal matures the spots became denser and spread until the body appears black with white spots at full maturation.
The Atlantic Spotted is a gregarious creature. It is a fast swimmer, keen bow-rider and prone to acrobatic aerial displays.

Whale watch, Sunday June 26

Sunday morning, 10 o'clock, South coast of Pico... It couldn't have been a more peaceful, calm and gorgeous day out there. Flat calm waters, small amount of boats around, sunshine, smiling people and beautiful sea creatures. The Sperm whales seemed to be resting mainly, slipping silently underneath the surface, not even a tail, before coming up again within 5 minutes in a spot close by. After observing the whales for about an hour, our "vigia" Antero let us know that a big group of Pilot whales was also spotted. The group was split up in smaller subgroups and the whales were magnificent; calm and relaxed, logging (floating) on the surface. We turned off the engine and just listened to the whales breathing about 50 metres away from our boat. What a magical moment! On our way back to Lajes we found a small group of Common dolphins, which played around the boat for a litle while, before dissapearing into the deep Blue. Nobody had a word to say anymore... The smiles on our faces showed enough...

Pilot whales are among the largest of the oceanic dolphins, exceeded in size only by the killer whale. They and other large members of the dolphin family are also known as blackfish. Pilot whales are primarily squid eaters but will feed on fish as well. They are also highly social and studies suggest that both males and females remain in their mothers’ pods, an unusual trait among mammals which would also be found in certain killer whale communities. Short-finned pilot whales are also one of the few mammal species where females go though menopause and post-reproductive females may contribute to the survival of younger members of their pods. Pilot whales are notorious for stranding themselves on beaches, and are among the most common cetacean stranders. Several theories have been proposed to account for this behavior. The status of both species is not understood and they have been subject to direct and indirect catches by fisheries. Whalers in a few countries continue to hunt pilot whales.

The Holy Ghost Festivals of Espírito Santo are very important to the Azorean people. The festivals are rooted in medieval traditions and typically held on all the islands from May to September, including lively parades and large feasts. As part of the tradition, soup and bread are handed out to revelers during these events. On Terceira and other islands, decorative houses called Imperios are the staging points for the feeding of the masses.On Sunday June 12th staff and guests of Pico Sport went to Candelaria to join in the festivities there.

Erich Ritter with Shark School in Pico

Last week Pico Sport has had the honour of having Dr. Erich Ritter coming to Pico to train dive instructors and guides to become qualified Shark Guides. Erich Ritter is the worlds leading scientist in human - shark interaction behavior. He arrived in Pico 2 weeks ago for 10 days to work with diving companies from Pico and Faial. To become a certified shark guide is very important. Here in the Azores we want to offer safe shark diving to avoid incidents from the very beginning. Three dive centers participated in the course held at Pico Sport, the company that dives around Pico since 19 years. Faials oldest company, Norberto Diver and Dive Azores with Tiago Castro participated. We even had 3 instructors from a Spanish company joining us.
Pico Sport and Sharkschool International promote safe shark diving and the Azores are the first spot in the world that will have this certificate handed out to their guides. We highly recommend divers to only book their shark dive with certified Dive centers in the Azores Islands.

Male common dolphin

The only way to determine a dolphin’s gender in the wild is to see a clear view of their genitals, or to observe an erection, act of intercourse, or a baby swimming close to an adult presumed to be a female.
On the underside of their belly, males have two separate slits, or grooves. One is called the genital groove and the other the anal groove. They lie in line with each other such that the grooves of a male resemble an exclamation point.
Females have one continuous slit which houses both the anal and genital openings. Females also have a set of slits housing the mammary glands. These slits flank either side of the genital slit.

Common dolphins copulating

Over the last weeks we have had big groups of Common dolphins cruising through the area. We have had several customers going out to sea already to swim with these acrobatic and happy creatures, and some of the swims have been amazing. The visibility has been clear and the dolphins interactive!
In the Azores it is allowed to swim with 5 different species of dolphin! Bottlenose dolphins, Common dolphins, Striped dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins, Risso’s dolphins.

Marine Biology in the Azores

Hi, my name is Hella Martens, and I am from the Netherlands. I have arrived in Pico almost 2 weeks ago and will be working as a whale and dolphin watching guide with Pico Sport for the next 6 months.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Management and have specialized in the field of cetaceans (the combined name for whales, dolphins and porpoises) research, conservation and education for the past 7 years. I have had amazing opportunities all over the world working with different whale and dolphin species in all sorts of different positions. While living and working in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Scotland and the Canary Islands, I have learned to appreciate and enjoy the immense beauty and importance of rich ecosystems, both on land and in the ocean.

Working with Pico Sport in the Azores is a new, exciting challenge for me. The area is extremely rich with so many different species. Already in my first week I have seen 4 new species I had never had the chance to encounter before; the Blue Whale, Fin Whale, Sei Whale and Risso's Dolphin. Also Bottlenose Dolphins, Common Dolphins and Sperm Whales have been seen on various trips. The highlight of my stay so far has been yesterday's sighting of the gigantic Blue Whale, foraging at a speed of 20/25 knots. The sheer size and power of this animal was incredible!! The customers, the skipper and myself were blown away (literally)! See the previous posting in this blog for photos of that sighting... :-)

I would like to invite anybody with a passion for wildlife and the ocean to join us! Every day on the water is a different one, and I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge on these amazing creatures!! You will have an amazing experience!

Here a shoot of Renate, Gerds wife. She was lucky enough to get the short moment when the blue whale comes up with wide open mouth.....maybe full of Krill and fish.

The Blue Whale season is ending in this days. They migrate to the north where they find food drifting from the high Arctic when the ice is melting. Maybe Island, maybe Greenland, maybe Hudson bay---who knows.

The next Blue whale season starts in April 2012....long time from now. But in the meanwhile we see Spermwhales, Pilotwhales and we are waiting for the Beaked whales and spotted Dolphins to arrive.

Pico Sport internationale

Mi chiamo Guja e sono appena arrivata a Pico.

Mi sono rivolta a Pico Sport per fare del whale watching e del nuoto coi delfini ed e’ stata un esperienza incredibile.

Il primo giorno il mare era calmo e c’era un bel sole caldo. Abbiamo visto 4 capodogli, di cui uno con cucciolo a seguito.

Abbiamo anche incontrato piu volte branchi di delfini, di varie speci: delfini comuni, tursiopi e persino i timidi grampi.

Il secondo giorno, gli avvistatori sull’isola hanno segnalato la presenza di una balenottera azzurra!!!! Allora tutti eccitati siamo partiti alla “caccia”, ovviamente fotografica, di questo splendido esemplare.

Purtroppo non siamo riusciti ad avvistarla, ma in compenso abbiamo visto moltissimi delfini e una moltitudine di migliaia di uccelli marini della specie calonetris diomedea, che si cibavano di un enorme palla di pesce.

Nel branco di pesce saettavano delfini affamati…Un esperienza veramente unica!!!

Tauchlehrer bei Pico Sport

Hallo , mein Name ist Patrick Doll und ich werde die nächsten 5 Monate als Tauchlehrer und Guide bei Pico Sport arbeiten . Ich bin PADI und CMAS Tauchlehrer und habe in der Vergangenheit an den unterschiedlichsten Orten im Atlantik und im Mittelmeer gearbeitet .

Auch wenn ich in den vergangenen Jahren hauptsächlich die Unterwasserwelt erkundet habe , so bin ich nun tief beeindruckt von den Whalewatchingtouren die ich hier in den letzten 2 Wochen bereits begleitet habe .

Der Artenreichtum an Walen und Delphinen ist unglaublich ! Auf allen bisherigen Ausfahrten sahen wir Pottwale , Gemeine Dephine und Grosse Tümmler . Dazu kommen jetzt immer mehr Sichtungen von grossen Bartenwalen wie zum Beispiel Finwale und Seiwale .

In der Zukunft werde ich dann interessierte und abenteuerlustige Taucher zu den Blauhaien begleiten und freue mich schon auf schöne Erlebnisse mit Euch an den zahlreichen Tauchplätzen rund um Pico !

Alle Naturfreunde , Fotobegeisterte und Taucher sind also herzlich willkommen !

Whale und Shark Guide bei Pico Sport

Hai, mein Name ist Robert Marc Lehmann und ich bin vor einer Woche auf den Azoren angekommen. Die nächsten 5 Monate werde ich als zuständiger Meeresbiologe bei PicoSport in Madalena als Whalewatching- und Shark-Guide arbeiten.

Momentan arbeite ich mit den Walen, aber schon in naher Zukunft stehen die Haie auf dem Programm.

In nur 7 Tagen auf den Azoren habe ich schon 6 unterschiedliche Arten von Meeressäugern gesichtet (Finnwale, Buckelwale, Pottwale, Gewöhnliche Delfine, Rundkopfdelfine und Große Tümmler). Außerdem war ich schon mit den ersten Gästen zum Delfinschwimmen im Wasser, wobei die Delfine auf ein bis zwei Meter nah an die Schnorchler herankamen. Ich bin sehr gespannt, was die nächsten Tage bringen, denn jetzt beginnt die Zeit der großen Bartenwale. Aber auch andere Organismen kann man hier entdecken. Auf den Ausfahrten sehen wir immer wieder Sepia-Sturmtaucher, Seeschwalben, Portugiesische Galeeren, Schildkröten und Mondfische. Auch mehrere Baitballs (Große Ansammlungen von verschiedenen Tieren um einen Fischschwarm herum, zum Fressen) haben wir schon beobachtet.Traumhaft!

Eine Kenya Safari auf Rhino watch

Eine ganze Weile sind wird zurück von der Rhino Watch Lodge, und langsam sortieren sich Eindrücke und die Berge von Fotos. Wir haben drei wunderschöne Wochen in Kenia verbringen dürfen, den größten Teil davon auf Franks Lodge, umsorgt von einem Heer freundlicher Menschen. Wir vermissen das alles sehr. Wer Entspannung sucht und Tiere mag, kann es nicht besser treffen. Wir waren viel in den Parks und Reservaten unterwegs, stundenlang, und Moses, unser kundiger Fahrer verlor nie die Geduld mit uns. Aber zwischendurch hatten wir auch immer den einen oder anderen Ruhetag auf der Lodge. Vor dem Chalet in der Sonne hocken, die Aussicht auf den Garten, die Savanne und Mount Kenya genießen, den Vögeln zusehen und auf das nächste Essen warten – auch so kann man den Tag prima rumkriegen.

Was wir gesehen haben? Klar, die Big Five und auch all die anderen Tiere, derentwegen man Kenia besucht.

Eigentlich kennt man sie ja alle von zuhause aus dem Zoo, wo man zudem manches Tier viel näher oder überhaupt richtig sieht. Einen Löwen, Elefanten, Gepard überhaupt zu sehen ist nicht der Punkt. Sondern diese Tiere so zu sehen, nein, zu erleben.

Wenn eine Elefantenkuh und ihr Kalb im ausgetrockneten Flußbett des Uaso Nyiro River nach Wasser graben …

… , wenn Hippos in der Morgendämmerung im Lake Baringo balgen …

…, wenn sich ein ganzer Schwarm Flamingos, aufgeschreckt von einem Fischadler, gleichzeitig in die Lüfte erhebt …

… oder einfach nur ein Herde Impalas in der Kühle des frühen Morgens durch die Steppe springt, so dass man das Gefühl hat, dass es ihnen einfach Spaß macht …

…, dann ist es etwas ganz Besonderes. Und das alles und viel mehr erleben zu dürfen war einfach toll. Danke an Frank, seine Familie und alle die anderen guten Geister von „Rhino“, dass sie uns diese schöne Zeit möglich gemacht haben.

Elke visit´s Pico

Saisonstart auf Pico....

Der Frühling ist auch auf Pico angekommen und mit dem Frühling kommt Elke Hermann zu Besuch. Das ist fast in jedem Jahr so. Elke hat in den letzten 14 Tagen Blauwale, Finwale, Pottwale und Delphine beobachtet.

Aber auch die schöne Madeira Eidechse in einer Hottentotten Feige ist ein lohnenswertes Motiv......

Hier in den Weinfelder an der Südküste wird im September der leckere Terras de Lava geerntet. Es lohnt sich alleine für den leckeren Wein ein besuch auf Pico....

Wenn der Berg frei ist und das Wetter mild sind endlose Wanderungen möglich.

Elke wird als nächstes wieder an Bord sein bei unserer Glattwaltour in Patagonien.....

Pub Tennis after Orca attack

das ewige Spiel der Natur zu beobachten ist ein Previleg. In Punta Norte sind wir Jahr für Jahr hautnah an diesen Geschehnissen. So eindrucksvoll es ist, so grausam scheint es zu sein.....

Nachdem die Orcas ein Seelöwenbaby erbeutet haben bringen sie es lebend zum Rest des Pods.

Den Jungtieren wird hier beigebracht wie man mit der Beute umgeht, diese tötet und um freien Gewässer nachstellt. Das ist wichtig um die Jagdtechniken der neuen Generation bei zu bringen.

Die Orca Dame MARGA legt sich hier den Seelöwen auf die Fluke und wirft das erbeutete Tier hoch in die Luft.

Es erscheint uns grausam wie die Orcas mit der Beute umgehen. Es ist aber nichts anderes als das Spiel der Katze mit der Maus. Am Ende dient die Beute der Ernährung. Das Protein eines Seelöwen ist wichtig für die Ernährung der Orcas.

Orca Party in Patagonia

Die Orcas von Valdes.

Wie in jedem Jahr bin ich im März wieder in Patagonien unterwegs bei Orcas und Pinguinen.

Leider waren in den letzten Wochen die Leitungen so langsam das es unmöglich war aktuelle Bilder ins Netz zu stellen. Deshalb gibt es heute von Puerto Piramides aus einen kleinen Vorgeschmack und news.

Im Angriffskanal von Punta Norte haben wir viel neues gesehen. Ich konnte Bilder machen die es bisher noch gar nicht gab und mir auch in 19 Jahren nicht gelungen sind.

Es gibt überhaupt nur 2 Berichte von einer Orca Attacke auf einen See Elephanten im Atack Channel. Natürlich jagen die Orcas See Elepahnten, aber meist im offenen Meer oder an der Küste der Calhetta Valdez. Nicht aber im März und nicht im Kanal. Da man nie weis wo ein Orca einen See Elephaten fängt ist das folgende Bild umso wertvoller. Direkt vor den Linsen unserer Kameras jagte die Orca Dame MARGA diesen jungen See Elephanten Bullen.....neben mit die TV Teams von IMAX, Universum/ Discovery Channel sowie ein ZDF Team.....die Freude über die seltene Aufnahme könnt Ihr sicher nachvollziehen.

Ich werde später die komplette Bildfolge einstellen und mehr dazu schreiben........spannend !!!

Wer bei einer Orca Reise dabei sein möchte der kann sich freuen. Im April 2012 gibt es ein Orca Camp für Judendliche ab 16 Jahre und Stundenten. Neben den Orca Beobachtungen schnorcheln wir mit Seelöwen, Kanutouren sind vorgesehen und eine Mountain Bike Tour auf der Halbinsel Valdes. Auch die Felsenpinguine in Puerto Deseado werden beobachtet.

Die Tour wird geleitet von mir, der weltführenden Orca Forscherin Dr. Ingrid Visser und dem deutschen Diplom Biologen Robert Lehmann.

Natürlich gibt es auch weitere Fotoreisen Termine bei den Oracas und eine Orca und Naturtour. Termine März/April 2012.

Elephanten sehen wir bei unseren Safaris im Amboseli Nationalpark oder wie hier im Samburu Natonalpark in großer Anzahl.

Von der Rhino watch Safari Lodge sind es nur gute 2 Stunden bis wir im Samburu Nationalpark sind. Dort verbringen wir normalerweise 3 tage um Elephanten aber auch Leoparden Gerenuk Antilopen und Gravy´s Zebras zu beobachten.

Vorstellung der Sharkweeks Azoren

Wie im letzten Jahr bin ich wieder auf der Boot in Düsseldorf. Mit an unserem Messestand ist der Haiforscher Dr. Erich Ritter mit dem wir 2010 die sharkschool auf Pico durchgeführt haben.

Auch 2011 gibt es die sharkschool Azoren zu drei Terminen. Neu sind unsere sharkweeks. Während der sharkweeks tauchen wir mit Blauhaien, besuchen den Deep Sea Mountain von Princess Alice um mit Mantas zu tauchen, beobachten Wale und schnorcheln mit Delphinen.

Our filming with the 3 D team goes on.

Now its the time of birthgiving of the sea lions. We are filming in La Madrugada Estancia which is a Silvestri Park not fare from Puerto Deseado.

In the next days we will join them and also widness the copulation of the sea lions.

After we will be again with the penguins at Penguin Island.

In March we will be with the Orcas in Punta Norte that will hunt on sea lion pubs. That is the time when the newborns start to explore the sea and cruise the the shallow water at Punta Norte.......

Schnorcheln mit Delphinen

Schwimmen mit Delphinen auf Pico.....

ist ein besonderes Erlebnis. Es macht süchtig. Wer einmal die Welt der Delphine erlebt hat wird diesen Eindruck nie wieder los.

So erging es auch Elke Herman. Elke war bereits 5 mal auf Pico in den letzten Jahren und nimmt auch regelmäßig an unseren Sondertouren irgendwo in der Welt teil.

Im September war Elke auf Pico und hat sowohl mit Fleckdelphinen als auch mit großen Tümmlern geschnorchelt.

Bewaffnet mit einer kleinen Digi Knipse konnte Elke diese Bilder machen die Sie für unseren blog zur Verfügung stellt.

Hier kommt nun noch ein Top Link mit eindrucksvollen Videoaufnahmen von den Delphinen unter Wasser. Vielen Dank an Lisa und Holli dafür.

Big Kenya Safari

Im September war es wieder soweit. Mit 16 Freunden und Fotografen waren wir in Kenya unterwegs. Die Route ging ab Nairobi, über die Masai Mara hinein ins Rift Valley. Dort haben wir am Baringo und Bogoria See gestoppt. Dann ging es weiter in unsere Rhino Watch Safari Lodge um den Abschluss in Samburu zu machen....
Täglich wurden tausende an Megabites gespeichert. Uli Assmann hat uns diese Selektion an grandiosen Bildern gesendet. Und das ist nur ein ganz kleiner Teil der enstandenen Superbilder.

Los ging es in der Masai Mara. Im September findet sich due Gnuwanderung am Mara Fluss ein um zurück in die Serenegti zu wandern. Auch 2011 und 2012 haben wir Gnuwanderung Safaris im Angebot......

Zur Zeit der Gnuwanderung haben die Raubkatzen Hochsaison.

Diese Löwin hat einen Wasserbüffel entdeckt der unbedacht durch die landschaft trottet. Welch ein Glüch für Uli und all die anderen Fotografen , denn solch eine Situation bekommt man nur sehr selten zu sehen.

Als der Büffel näher kommt beginnt der Angriff...

Obwohl so ein Wasserbüffel ein stattliches Tier ist hat er gegen die drei Löwinnen keine Chance.

Auf die Nashörner im Solio park ist immer Verlass. Eines der längsten Hörner der Welt !

Der Bogoria See ist der absolute geheimtipp. Hier werden wir in 3 Wochen Mit Cousteaus 3 D Film Team unterwegs sein....

Am Baringo See ist der Schreiseeadler zu Hause...wo sonst gelingen schon solche Bilder ?

Und der Nachwuchs freut sich.

Der Baringo See ist ein Vogelparadies. Lange Brennweiten sind angesagt.

Der Abschluss unserer Safari war im samburu Park, der für Elephanten und Leoparde berühmt ist.

Vulkan Sierra Negra

Auf der Insel Isabella befindet sich ein gewaltiger Vulkan mit einem riesigen Krater.

Der Vulkan ist aktiv.

Die Wanderung auf diesen Vulkan geht zunächst vom Ausgangspunkt aus 1 Stunde. Dabei gibt es eine Steigung die man in gut 15 Minuten überwunden hat. Danach geht es mehr oder weniger gerade weiter. Dann erreicht man den Kraterrand mit einem phantastischen Ausblick.

Danach geht es weiter zum kleinen Krater. Immer wieder geniesst man herrliche Ausblicke....

Natürlich haben wir auf unseren Fotouren im Februar 2012 und November 2011 und 2012 auch einen Tag dort oben geplant.

Galapagos Kakteen und darum herum

Das ist eine Galapagos Opuntie ( Opuntia echios zacana )

Und weil die lecker schmecken wohnt der Galapagos Leguan gleich darunter

Bis die Blüten herab fallen.

checkt noch mal nach , denn man muss ja darauf achten das man nicht in Stacheln beisst...

aber dann gehts los

und ab ins Versteck damit

aber nicht genug, die Suche geht weiter

ahhhhhh, fündig geworden

und wie gut das schmeckt sieht man hier.....

aber auch andere mögen die Blüten....bzw. was darin ist

auch der Darwin Bodenfink checkt erst einmal nach

ja, das riecht wirklich sehr gut

also steckt er den Kopf hinein

und nascht so richtig los

das Weibchen wartet noch ab was das Männchen so sagt.

und noch ein Verwerter ist unterwegs

Dies ist eine Galapagos Holzbiene - Xylocopa darwinii

Holzbienen sind „Nektarräuber“ und können mit ihrem kräftig gebauten Saugrüssel Blütenröhren durchstoßen, um Nektar zu saugen. Sie sammeln jedoch auch Pollen, den sie nicht nur mit den Haarbürsten auf den Schienen und der Ferse der Hinterbeine, sondern großteils auch in ihrem Kropf transportieren.

Diese Serie an diesem Kaktus habe ich innerhalb von 20 Minuten geschossen.!!!!

Galapagos ist wunderbar. Wer die Augen auf macht bekommt Ihr endlos viele gute Bilder.

Auf Isabella

Nachdem wir von Santa Cruz nach Isabella übergesetzt sind, ereilte das Kamera Team der Alptraum. Schaden am Gerät. Damit ist der Galapagos Dreh erst einmal geplatzt. Nun drehen wir auf kleinem Gerät weiter um überhaupt noch etwas an Material zu haben. Mal sehen ob es für den Film reicht.....

Ic h habe mich umgesehen und eine weitere Bootstour gemacht in eine unglaubliche Welt. Rund 40 Minuten mit dem Boot entfernt vom Hafen liegt ein Kap.

Durch das Riff geht es in Lavatunnel mit dem Boot. Eine Traumwelt.

Optuntien, das sind Kakteen, haben auf dem kargen Lavaboden Wurzeln geschlagen und dekorieren die bizarre Lava Landschaft. Einmalig....

Blaufusstölpel sitzen auf den Lavabrocken.

Mit dem Boot liegen wir hier mitten in dieser Märchenwelt. Frieder und Martina wollten hier gar nicht mehr weg.

Schildkröten nutzten diese wundersamen Plätze als Paarungsstätte. In manchen Momenten hatten wir 20 Schildkröten um uns herum.....Schnorcheln gestattet !!!!!!!

Die Lavamöwe schreit lauthals als wir unsere Ceviche zu Mittag essen.

Was ist Ceviche????? ......das werde ich Euch dann im kommenden Jahr erzählen !

Im Flachwasser tummeln sich kleine Weisspitzenriffhaie.

Natürlich werden wir diese Tour auch während unserer Gruppenreise ab 6. November 2011 besuchen..

Heute gibt es Newsmeldungen aus Pico.

Auf den Azoren liegt im Moment alles im Winterschlaf. Erst im März lassen wir die ersten Boote ins Wasser um Blauwale zu beobachten. Bis dahin wird gepflegt, repariert und gebaut.

Der Pico präsentiert sich oft von seiner schönsten Seite, auch im Winter.

Die Weinfelder bei Areia Large sind Unesco Weltkulturerbe.

Hier noch ein Bild aus dem Sommer. Am Dock liegt die Flotte von Pico Sport.

Was wird es neues geben 2011?

Als erstes wird der Wale und Delphine Workshop mit Dr. Ingrid Visser aus Neuseeland wiederholt. Termine erscheinen bald auf der Webseite.

Dann kommt im August Dr. Erich Ritter und wird 3 x die shark school durchführen. Dabei gibt es einen Termin für Schnorchler.....

Und wir bieten ab sofort für alle die gerne mit unseren Haien tauchen möchten ein neues Produkt an.

Die Shark Weeks

Im Jahr 2010 hat Pico Sport in Ko - Operation mit Dr. Erich Ritters Shark School die Gewässer rund um die Insel Pico erkundet auf der Suche nach Haien.

Dabei entdeckten wir die Geburtsplätze der glatten Hammerhaie sowie Blauhaie und Mako Haie in den vorgelagerten Bänken. Mit einer Technik die sich auch an anderen Stellen in der Haiarbeit bewährt hat haben wir mehrfach versucht mit den Tieren zu arbeiten. Dies brachte den gewünschten Erfolg. Die Blauhaie lassen sich mittlerweile fast vom Shark Guide mit der Hand füttern......

Die Shark Weeks sind ein neues Programm welches 2011 erstmals neben der bekannten Shark School auf Pico stattfinden wird. Im Mittelatlantik haben wir es manchmal mit Wetterbedingungen zu tun, die es nicht möglich machen die vorgelagerten Bänke zu erreichen. Deshalb ist es nötig die Reise auf 14 Tage zu planen.

In dieser Zeitspanne haben wir dann exzellente Möglichkeiten um mit Haien zu arbeiten. Dazu kombinieren wir das Programm mit 2 Tauchtagen am TOP Sport im Atlantik, dem Tiefseeberg Princess Alice. Hier tauchen wir in Mobula Schwärmen und mit pelagischem Fisch.

Dazu schnorcheln wir mit Delphinen und beobachten die Wale des Mittelatlantiks.

Die Sichtweiten liegen weit über 30 Meter.......folgen Sie uns ins Deep Blue der Azoren......

Die angewendete Technik ist vielen schon aus Südafrika oder Californien bekannt. Der Shark Guide legt zunächst mit einem Gemisch aus Blut und Thuna Fleisch eine Geruchsspur. Diese sackt in die Tiefe und lockt somit die Haie an die normalerweise in den tieferen Gewässern unterwegs sind.

Wenn die Haie anfangen zu fressen werden sie nicht agressiv sondern neugierig. Auch werden die Tiere von den elektrischen Magnetfeldern in den Blitzten der Fotokameras angelockt und kommen somit ganz nahe....

Hier wird etwas Köder nachgelegt. Oft waren wir bis zu 2 Stunden mit den Tieren im Wasser, ein einmaliges Erlebnis.

Im Dezember Heft der Zeitschrift TAUCHEN, wird Wolfgang Pölzer über seine Erfahrungen mit unseren Blauhaien berichten die er im September 2010 gemacht hat. In nur 3 Tauchgängen konnte er wunderbare Bilder schiessen. Die oben gezeigten Bilder sind alle von Ihm und ein kleiner Vorgeschmack auf den Artikel.....

Couesteau Movie PATAGONIA

Filming in 3 D Part 2

The Film team is back in Patagonia. Now the Rockhopper penguin have invased the Canyon and we are filming them close up. We were able to capture phantastic shots of them.

With the crane we are able to get special effects that you will enjoy in the cinema.

The magellanic penguins have their first chicks. They are hedging in these days. Today we will be at Bird Island to film them again.....I hope more pictures will come out, to show you how we proceed.

After this shooting the film team will continue to visit us in Kenya.....

In December we will shoot Flamingos and Rhinos in 3 D and of course i will keep you updated.

In January we are back in Patagonia.

In February back in Kenya

and in March filming the hunting Orca and Penguins in Patagonia again....

Tiere auf den Galapagos Inseln

Galapagos steht für endemische Arten. Das bedeutet das es sich um Tiere handelt die es nur hier gibt. Einer davon ist der Darwin Fink. Diese Bodenfink pickt Samen aus blühendem Gras. Da braucht man schon etwas Zeit um das Tier in der richtigen Position zu erwischen.....

Flamingos sind in den Lagunen auf Isabella zu finden. Mit 400mm bewaffnet sollte es gut klappen diese Tiere abzulichten.

Frieder, unser Fotograf hat viel Spaß bei den Riesenschildkröten. Hier kann man sich wirklich Fototechnisch austoben.

Der Galapagos Landleguan ist auch endemisch. Er ernährt sich von den Früchten der Opuntien.....das sind Kakteenbäume.

Seelöwen sind hier sehr zutraulich

Dies ist ein Seebär

Seeschildkröten kommen in die flachen Gewässer der Mangroven um sich zu paaren.

und natürlich die Meeresechsen die allgegenwärtig sind.

Meeresechsen

Eines der Themen die für uns derzeit zum Filmen anstehen sind die Meeresechsen. Dabei möchten wir filmen, wie die Tiere an Land leben, wie Sie schwimmen, tauchen und fressen.

Das wird uns auf Isabelle am Besten gelingen, weil wir dort recht einfach Zugang zum Meer haben. Ich konnte dort einige sehr gute Stellen erkunden, die auch im November 2011 Ziel für unsere Fototour sein werden.

Hier sieht man ein grosses Exemplar am endlosen Sandstrand....

Dieses Hotel heisst Iguana Crossing. ich konnte das passende Photo dazu schiessen.

Dieses Hotel gehört zur gehobenen Preisgruppe, wird aber in Zukunft bei unseren Touren gegen Aufpreis buchbar sein. Es liegt nur 200m neben unserem gebuchten Hotel.

Die Echsen sonnen sich gern auf den Felsen, die überall entlang des Strandes zu finden sind. Somit werden die Tiere zu dankbaren Fotomotiven. Dennoch ist Vorsicht geboten. Schwarze Tiere auf Schwarzem Stein....das richtige Licht und der richtige Blickwinkel.....richtige Blendenwahl ist gefragt und es bleibt viel auszuprobieren. Deshalb werden wir uns den ganzen Tag Zeit nehmen um viele Situationen zu bekommen.

Wenn die Ebbe einsetzt, folgen die Tiere dem Wasser. Sie haben dann Zugang zu den Felsen die sonst unter Wasser sind. Darauf wachsen Algen die Ihre Nahrung sind.

Eindrücke aus Galapagos

In den letzten Tagen bin ich unterwegs gewesen und habe mit dem Team bei den Riesenschildkröten gedreht. Ich muss ehrlich sagen das es toll ist, den ganzen Tag bei den Tieren zu verbringen. Erst denkt man ja, was kann man wohl bei den langsame Tieren fotografieren ???

Hat man sich aber erst einmal mit dem Lebensraum angefreundet, dann kommen viele Motive. Deshalb planen wir bei der Fototour im November 2011 mindestens einen ganzen Tag hier in den Highlands.

Und nun einige Impressionen......

Oben der Landleguan - unten die Meeresechse

Beide stehen für endemische Tierarten auf Galapagos

Fregattvögel sind hier auch nicht scheu. Wunderschön der rote Kehlsack des Männchens der bei der Balz aufgeblasen wird.

Meeresechsen fressen den Algen und Seegrasbewuchs auf dem Meeresgrund. Bei Ebbe klettern die Tier einfach zum Futter, aber oftmals tauchen Sie auch in den Brandungszonen danach.

Der Gelbkopfreiher sitzt auch in der Brandungszone.

Rote Galapagoskrabben in der Brandungsszone sitzten hier an jedem Felsen.

Und noch einmal im Hochland bei den Riesenschildkröten. Den Fotografen bleibt hier wirklich mal etwas zeit zum Bildaufbau.

Frieder hat seinen Spaß, weil dieser Riese ohne Angst auf Ihn zugeht.

Was die beiden sich zu erzählen haben, können Sie im November 2011 bei unserer Gruppenreise heraus finden. Ab 18. Februar 2012 wird es eine weitere Tour geben.

Im Hochland von Santa Cruz

Teil 2

Auf den Weg von den Schildkröten zu unserem Buschrestaurant gab es noch einen Stop an einem 1,5 km langen Lavatunnel. Erinnerungen an Pico....

Danach geht es dann aber endlich zum Mittagessen. Mitten im Busch taucht in einem Bambuswald der Grillplatz auf.

Auf dem offenen Feuer werden traditionelle Speisen zubereitet.

Das es hier öfters mal feucht fröhlich zu geht zeigt das Leergut das vom Leergutwächter bewacht wird.

Hier schauen wir in die Töpfe...Yucca, Süsskartoffel, Schwein in Sosse, Hühnersuppe...

Lecker war es.....morgen geht es weiter und wir beginnen mit der Filmerei.
