The blue shark diving

We have been out again to look for the Blue Sharks. Its the 4th time now we tried and.....4 times success...Its working....
Dr. Erich Ritter and our Diving Ínstructor and Shark Specialist Claus Poeter worked out the system and now we know the tactic to call the sharks.

If you want to join us for shark diving in 2011 here are the seasons:

June / July we dive / snorkel with Smooth Hammerhead Sharks
July - September we dive with Blue sharks, Mako Sharks and Mobula Rays

Blue sharks and Mako sharks

Pico Sport is proud to announce that our test programms with sharks is working our very well !

Since 2 month we are working on the new programms to dive sharks in our blue waters.
Dr. Erich Ritter, sharkschool.com was here to work with us and showed us how to do it....
In the last weeks we went 3 times to try it out and each time we had blue shark contacts after 20 minutes.
In two excursions also Mako sharks came to us.

Die Geburt eines Tümmlers

Am 22.07.2010 beobachtete Britta Wälter aus Schwerte als Gast bei Pico Sport beim Schwimmen mit Delfinen zufällig ein neugeborenes Tümmler Kalb ca. 10 Meter unter sich im Blauwasser vor der Küste Picos. „Die Delfine bildeten einen Kreis um das Kleine, die Nabelschnur war zu sehen und trübes, rotes Wasser deutete auf die Plazenta hin“, so Britta Wälter. „Für mich als Geburtsbegleiterin war das natürlich ein Highlight“. Die Delfingruppe versuchte das Kalb an die Wasseroberfläche zu pushen. Aus Rücksicht auf die Situation entfernten sich die Delfinschwimmer umgehend. Es blieb ungewiss, ob das Neugeborene den Weg an die Oberfläche geschafft hatte. Am nächsten Tag, den 23.07.2010 wurde Reisejournalistin Bettina Kelm aus München mit einem besondern Erlebnis beschenkt. Beim Schwimmen mit Delfinen, entdeckte Bettina Kelm eine dicht an dicht schwimmende Schule Großer Tümmler, die in Küstennähe am Meeresgrund verharrte. „In ihrer Mitte schwamm das Delfinbaby – wohlauf! Was für ein Kompliment der Delfine an mich, eine große Ehre, dass ich das erst ein Tag alte Familienmitglied sehen durfte“, so die Münchnerin. „Doch dann war für mich klar, hier will ich nicht stören und schwamm zum Boot zurück. Skipper Eduardo von Pico Sport entschied sich aus Respekt gegenüber den Tieren, an dieser Stelle das Schwimmen abzubrechen und die kontaktfreudigen Tümmler vom Boot aus beobachten. Die Tiere begleiteten uns noch eine Weile und sprangen neben dem Boot. Was für ein Erlebnis!

Dr. Erich Ritter findet Kinderstube der Glatten Hammerhaie

SENSATION

Dr. Erich Ritter war 14 Tage unser Gast und hat die erste Shark School auf den Azoren abgehalten.
Die Sensation ist das er eine Nursery der Smooth Hammerheads entdeckt hat. Die Teilnehmer konnten sich dieser seltenen Haiart bis auf einen Meter nähern.

Auch haben wir Blauwassertauchgänge mit Blauhaien und Makohaien gehabt. Entfernung zu den Tieren untern einem METER!

In wenigen Tagen wird es an dieser Stelle einen Bericht geben von Erich mit den ersten Bildern.....TOP Material....so viel verraten wir schon mal.

Whale school von Dr. Ingrid Visser auf Pico

Nun ist es soweit. Die erste Whale School der Welt hat begonnen.

Die bekannte Orca Forscherin aus Neuseeland und die deutsche Diplom Biologin führen den Wale und Delphine Workshop auf Pico mit Pico Sport durch. In den nächsten Tagen gibt es updates.

Shark School in Pico

The first shark school at Pico has startet. Dr. Erich Ritter arrived and today we had our first check out dive.

The wind is arriving so we will not be able for 2 days to go to the blue water....but from Wednesday on it looks perfect.
We are loking for Blue shark and Mako shark. Also Erich and Frank Wirth want to establish a shark protection programm.

The sharks are still caught in the Azorean water for finning and making fish fingers out of their meet.....

Lets create Pico as a shark destination and help the species to survive...

Bryde Whales in Pico

What a Baleen Whale season.
In the last weeks we have still seen Baleen whales around. It looks like that there is still enough food to keep some of the Giants in our waters.
Since 2 days we once again have a very special guest, a Bryde Whale.
Already 4 years ago we had a visitor from this species but now another one arrived. I hope this animal we stay with us during the summer......

a crazy Leatherback Turtle

Last week Jiri Reznizek from Czech Republic was working with spermwhales when a giant 500 kg Leatherback Turtle appeared. In 18 years working at Pico we never saw such a huge individual.....and it was so playfull. We could not believe what we saw when she played more than 30 minutes with Jiri.....

Humpback show at Pico - June - 2-2010

Rainer and Sybille Zemla from Duisburg are here at Pico at the moment for scuba diving.
But see what happened on June 2nd when they went to see some dolphins......a humpback whale came up and breached for almost 1 hour.
This pictures where taken just 300m from the coast out of Ponta Balleia, our houses in Sao Caetano. The clients staying in tis houses saw the whale breaching from the Veranda.
The season of the baleen whales should be over right now but still we have sightings. What a year.
